Actress Baek Ji-hye is turning heads with her irresistible and unconventional charm in her latest role.
In ENA’s Monday-Tuesday drama “Honor: Their Court,” Baek portrays Lee Sun-hwa, a character that’s hard to love at first glance. Rude, abrasive, and calculating, Lee nonetheless commands viewers’ attention in a way that’s impossible to ignore. Despite her seemingly unlikable traits, audiences find themselves unable to look away. From the moment she appears on screen, Lee has become a topic of heated discussion, with viewers describing her as an intensely powerful character that’s both uncomfortable to watch and utterly captivating.
While Lee refers to herself as “Mom” and calls Min-seo (played by Jeon So-young) “Daughter,” their relationship defies traditional family dynamics. What binds them isn’t blood or a sense of protection, but rather a shared history of survival. Their connection is less about mutual support and more about a complex dance of dependence and rejection.
The third episode brings the cracks in their relationship into sharp focus. Upon discovering Min-seo’s connection to Connect, Lee immediately sees it as leverage. In a tense scene at the L&J law firm, she drops the bombshell: “I know someone who works at Connect.” She then demands 30 million KRW (approximately 22,500 USD) from Yoon Ra-young (Lee Na-young) and Hwang Hyun-jin (Lee Cheong-ah) for this information. This calculated move reveals Lee’s willingness to weaponize danger for her own gain, underscoring her survival-driven mindset.
Baek’s nuanced portrayal ensures that Lee Sun-hwa transcends the simple villain archetype. When proposing the deal, her face is a canvas of conflicting emotions – anxiety and confidence battling for dominance. Her interactions with Min-seo are a mix of control and genuine concern. Love is conspicuously absent from her vocabulary; instead, survival is her mantra. The harsh, self-centered language she employs is the only survival strategy she knows, and it’s this raw, unfiltered approach to self-preservation that makes her the show’s most riveting character.
Throughout her career, Baek has consistently impressed audiences with her ability to delve deep into her characters’ psyches, whether on the big screen or small. Her performances in dramas like “Parole Officer Lee Han-sin,” “Iduna!,” and “Race,” as well as the film “Woongnam,” showcase her talent for building emotional complexity without resorting to overacting. Baek excels particularly in portraying anxiety, inner turmoil, and tension with subtle, controlled performances that bring a striking realism to her characters.
“Honor: Their Court,” featuring Baek Ji-hye, airs every Monday and Tuesday at 10 PM on ENA. Viewers can also catch the show on KT Genie TV and Coupang Play.
