By Seo Hyobin, iNews24 — YouTube, the world’s largest video platform, will add a feature that automatically detects videos produced or significantly altered by artificial intelligence (AI) and notifies viewers.

On May 27, YouTube said on its official blog that it is redesigning how it displays AI-disclosure labels to improve transparency around AI content. Since 2024, the company has labeled videos when creators voluntarily disclosed the use of AI tools; the key change is adding YouTube’s own detection system alongside creator disclosures.
The AI label will be more visible. For realistic, live-action videos—or regular videos that AI has substantially modified or generated—YouTube will place the label directly under the video player and above the description. For Shorts, the label will appear as an overlay on the video.
Animation, highly stylized footage, or content with only light AI edits will continue to indicate AI use in the expanded description, as before. YouTube says the update will standardize the labeling format for live-action AI content.
YouTube will also introduce automatic detection. Beginning in May 2026, it will phase in internal signals to identify AI-generated material. If the system detects significant live-action AI use, it will add a label automatically even if the creator does not disclose AI use.
Creators will still have the ability to correct mistakes. If they believe their content was wrongly labeled as AI-generated, they can change the disclosure status in YouTube Studio. However, content created with YouTube’s own AI tools, “Veo” or “Dream Screen,” or content that includes C2PA metadata declaring it fully generative will retain the label permanently.
YouTube said attaching an AI label will not affect a video’s placement in recommendations or its eligibility for monetization.
The company described the change as an effort to balance transparency with creator control, saying its goal is to make it as easy as possible for both creators and viewers to find the information they need.
