(The CEN News / Reporter Hyuna Lee) On May 20, a spokesperson for U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres issued a statement condemning Israel’s decision to install military facilities on U.N. premises in East Jerusalem “in the strongest terms.”
According to the statement, Guterres expressed deep concern about Israel’s plan to establish military facilities on a UNRWA site in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, which Israeli authorities forcibly seized in January.
He urged the Israeli government to withdraw the decision immediately and demanded that personnel taken from Sheikh Jarrah be returned to the U.N. without delay.
The U.N. reiterated that the inviolability and neutrality of international organizations’ facilities must be protected.
East Jerusalem has long been a central focus of territorial disputes between Israel and the Palestinians, and tensions have intensified amid the protracted war in Gaza.
