Busan, South Korea — the subway just got a chic, beachy upgrade.
Busan Transportation Corporation announced on the 14th that its summer-themed train, MetroMarin, will run on Busan Metro Lines 1 and 2 through September.
MetroMarin is a seasonal concept train whose interior is wrapped in images of Busan’s coastline and flagship sightseeing spots. This year’s motif is “yunseul,” the glint of sunlight dancing across the waves.
Riders stepping on board said it genuinely felt like stepping onto the shore and immediately reached for their phones to snap photos.
Three-dimensional visuals inside the cars showcase Busan’s iconic sights, from Gwangan Bridge and Oryukdo to Gamcheon Culture Village and the Songdo Marine Cable Car.
Only one themed train operates on each of Lines 1 and 2. The installation is located in car No. 4 on each train, and they run at least twice daily on weekdays.
The program is part of the “Busan Marine Event,” a project run in collaboration with the Busan Metropolitan Public Transit Citizen Fund. This season features two MetroMarin trains and six Busan Marine buses.
“We designed the subway so riders can feel the spirit of the Busan sea even underground,” the Busan Transportation Corporation said. “We hope it provides a fresh travel experience for both residents and visitors.”
Busan has been expanding tourism-focused content that leverages its urban rail and city buses to give both locals and tourists new ways to explore the city.
