[Sports Today reporter Kim Tae-hyung] Even though former After School member and actress Nana and her mother told the court they did not want to appear as witnesses in the trial over the home invasion, the court nonetheless added both to the witness list for the April hearing.
On the 24th, the First Criminal Division (D) of the Uijeongbu District Court’s Namyangju branch held the second hearing for a man in his 30s, identified only as A, who faces charges of robbery and injury.
Earlier, Nana’s mother filed notices of non-appearance and statements explaining her absence on the 26th of last month and on the 5th. Nana also submitted a written statement saying she does not want to face defendant A in person.
The court set the next hearing for April 21 and issued subpoenas to Nana and her mother. The move appears intended to establish facts related to A’s alleged actions, but their firm refusal to appear raises the prospect of a prolonged trial.
Prosecutors allege A broke into Nana’s home in Guri, Gyeonggi Province, in the early hours of Nov. 15 last year. Armed with a knife, he allegedly threatened and injured Nana and her mother and demanded money. The two women fought with him, subdued him, and reported the incident to police.
Afterwards, Nana submitted a medical certificate stating she required 33 days of treatment, while her mother submitted one stating 31 days. A, who remains in custody, filed a counter-complaint claiming Nana’s actions to subdue him amounted to attempted murder. Police, however, declined to press charges against the women, concluding their actions were in self-defense.
At the first hearing on Jan. 20, A acknowledged entering Nana’s home but said he intended only to commit theft, not robbery. He denied strangling Nana’s mother and denied assaulting the victims, instead claiming that Nana attacked him.
He further asserted that the injuries requiring 33 days of treatment were inflicted by Nana rather than defensive wounds inflicted by him. He asked the court to send the knife and its case, currently held as evidence, to the National Forensic Service for fingerprint analysis.
He insisted he did not carry a knife, denied choking Nana’s mother, and said he only grasped her shoulder to calm her after she panicked and pushed. He also claimed that once Nana’s mother had calmed, Nana suddenly ran out and swung a knife.

Nana’s agency, Sublime, said in a January statement that a thorough investigation clearly established the assailant’s criminal conduct. The agency said Nana and her family suffered severe physical and psychological harm during the attack by a person armed with a knife, and that the physical and mental distress continues.
Sublime added that, despite this, the assailant has shown no remorse and has filed a separate suit against Nana, exploiting her public profile and causing secondary harm. The agency said it is pursuing additional legal action.
In a video released on the YouTube channel “Jjanhan Hyung Shin Dong-yeop” on the 9th, Nana recounted the incident. She said, “The moment felt very long, but it really was an instant. Afterward, I thought that in a crisis you have to act on instinct. If I had hesitated, I would have been in danger. I wonder if I would have been that brave if the assailant hadn’t had a weapon. I couldn’t imagine it, but when I saw the dropped knife, I instinctively defended myself.”
She added, “My mother was in the living room and I was sleeping in my room. My room is far from the living room, so I usually don’t hear noises. But that day, like a blessing, my mother’s small sound reached my ear and woke me. She couldn’t shout because she worried I might wake up or get hurt. My mother later told me she had fainted after the assailant strangled her and that, as she felt she was losing breath, she regretted not being able to tell me to lock the door. I could feel how terrified she must have been. I think we were fortunate.”
Since the home invasion, Nana has continued to work in dramas and variety shows. On the March 21 broadcast of MBC’s “Omniscient Interfering View,” she said, “Since the incident, I keep self-defense tools around the house. I want to use them in emergencies. I have them at home and sometimes give them to friends as gifts.”
She currently plays intelligence source Hwang Jung-won in ENA’s Monday-Tuesday drama “Climax.”
