By Choi Jin-seung, NewsCulture — Against the backdrop of a hanok in the heart of Seoul, a new generation of gugak artists will take the stage, presenting experimental performances that challenge long-held assumptions about Korean traditional music.

At the center of the 2026 Namsan Madang Festa, held in the outdoor courtyard of the Seoul Namsan Gugakdang, a wave of ensembles reimagining gugak for the present will perform. Vocalist Kang Na-hyun, named the Seoul Namsan Gugakdang’s 2025 Young Gugak Artistic Director, and the string trio TRIGGER are among the acts drawing particular attention. Audiences can also expect striking performances from young bands such as Sonance, Sinawi Modern Gugak, and Gugak In Gayo.

On the festival’s opening day, Sonance, Park Su-hyun, Sinawi Modern Gugak, SWorld and the Seoul Talpae Alliance will appear. Sonance, a creative gugak ensemble built around the piri, gayageum and electronic music, will probe the question of gugak’s identity by blending tradition with contemporary sound.

Park Su-hyun will offer contemporary instrumental pieces that move fluidly between tradition and fusion, performing solely on the geomungo. By pairing familiar repertoire with the instrument’s broad palette of tones, she aims to make gugak feel both accessible and new. Sinawi Modern Gugak, a three-piece of daegeum, haegeum and geomungo, will reinterpret traditional rhythms and melodies through a modern lens.

SWorld will present a sword dance rooted in Korean dance and traditional martial arts, while the Seoul Talpae Alliance will inject youthful energy with a mask-dance performance.

The second day’s lineup includes the traditional-music research collective Heureni, Gugak In Gayo, Kang Na-hyun and the samulnori group Hanmaek. Heureni will deliver a lively program centered on sanjo and sinawi, and Gugak In Gayo will combine pansori with band instrumentation to create an interactive set. Gugak In Gayo is a fusion band that blends traditional music with K-pop’s popular appeal.

Kang Na-hyun, the next-generation vocalist chosen as the 2025 Young Gugak Artistic Director, will appear on the second day with a program intended to showcase new directions in traditional arts. The day will close with the dynamic rhythms and high-energy performance of samulnori group Hanmaek.

The festival’s final day spotlights a roster of promising young ensembles. YUHA, which links daegeum, dance and piano, will bring contemporary sensibilities and thematic depth to traditional roots, while the gayageum ensemble Sebit Gayageum will present a program that balances popular appeal and artistic rigor.

TRIGGER, a three-piece band of gayageum, geomungo and ajaeng, will translate classical and contemporary sensibilities through the language of strings. TRIGGER was also named a 2025 Young Gugak Artistic Director. To close the festival, Art Company Guseung — a collective that melds dance and visual art grounded in traditional practice — will present an immersive finale.

The Namsan Madang Festa offers young artists an open forum to connect with the public through experimental gugak performances. Set in a hanok courtyard, the festival is free and open for anyone to enjoy. Performances run May 1–3, beginning at 2 p.m. each day, with 30-minute sets.
