18-Year-Old Pianist Son Se-Hyuk Wins First Place at Prague Spring International Music Competition

Pianist Se-hyeok Son, 18 (pictured), won the piano division of the Prague Spring International Music Competition.
The Kumho Cultural Foundation and the competition organizers announced on May 14 (local time) that Son took first place in the piano category at the 77th Prague Spring International Music Competition, held at Dvořák Hall in the Rudolfinum in Prague.
In the final round, Son soloed with the Prague Symphony Orchestra in Johannes Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 1. China’s Wang Zhiquan and Chen Xuehong finished second and third. The first-place prize was 250,000 Czech koruna (about 17,900,000 KRW / approximately $13,425).
The Prague Spring International Music Competition has been held since 1947. Open to musicians 30 and under, it alternates each year between two instrumental categories; this year’s events featured flute and piano.
Past winners from the same competition include clarinetist Sang-yoon Kim; flutists Yu-bin Kim and Chae-yeon Yu; pianists Jin-hyung Park and Dong-ha Lee; the Arete Quartet; and bassoonist Min-ju Kim.
Son made his debut in 2021 at the Kumho Young Artists Concert. In 2022 he reached the finals of the Young Tchaikovsky International Music Competition, where he received the award for best performance of a Romantic work.
