Daegu Concert House will host a piano recital by Yunchan Lim as part of its Masterpiece Series on Friday, May 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Grand Hall.
It marks his first appearance in Daegu in two years since 2024, and tickets sold out immediately upon release.
Yunchan Lim rose to international prominence after becoming the youngest winner in the history of the 2022 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, where he also received the New Work Award and the Audience Award. The New York Times named his final-round performance one of its 10 performances of the year for 2022. His debut album, Chopin: Etudes, went on to win two awards at the 2024 Gramophone Awards, France’s Diapason d’Or, and three prizes at the 2025 BBC Music Magazine Awards.
The concert is part of the house’s flagship Masterpiece Series; Lim personally selected the program for this venue. In the hall dedicated to classical music, his nuanced touch and explosive energy should come through with exceptional clarity and depth.
In the first half he will perform Franz Schubert’s Piano Sonata No. 17 in D major, D. 850. Lim said he wanted to create work that endures over time and remains memorable, and described Schubert as a composer he has loved for years and never wanted to neglect.
The second half comprises Scriabin’s Piano Sonatas Nos. 2–4, a sequence that spans the composer’s early and middle periods. The three works are united by Scriabin’s characteristic mysticism and dramatic tension, leaving a lasting impression.
Notably, Sonata No. 2 is the piece Lim played in the second round of the 2022 Van Cliburn Competition — a decisive moment on his path to becoming the competition’s youngest winner. He will reprise it at this recital to showcase his fierce pursuit of music’s essence.
