Experience the Magic: Tenor Shim Song-hak’s 31st Solo Concert Featuring Schumann’s ‘Dichterliebe’ on May 1

Tenor Shim Song-hak, revered for his mastery of German art song, will present his 31st solo recital on May 1 at the small theater in Suseong Artpia. The program offers a retrospective of more than 50 years of his musical life and centers on Schumann’s song cycle Dichterliebe, Op. 48 — the work he performed at his 1974 debut — linking the early and current stages of his career.

The concert was scheduled for May to evoke the mood of the opening line of Dichterliebe: “On such a beautiful May day, I must confess my love.” The evening will include the complete Dichterliebe, selections from Myrten (Myrtle’s Flowers), Schubert’s “Serenade” and other German Romantic lieder. Pianist Seo Ju-hee will accompany. The recital is organized by Eugene Arts Planning and sponsored by the Daegu Cultural Foundation and the Daegu Metropolitan City.

Shim graduated from Seoul National University and the University of Music Heidelberg–Mannheim in Germany. He served on the faculty of Kyungpook National University from 1983 to 2014 and was dean from 1996 to 1998. He is now professor emeritus at Kyungpook and chairs both the Korean Art Song Association and the Daegu German Lieder Research Society.

Pianist Seo Ju-hee studied at Ewha Womans University and completed advanced performance programs at the conservatories in Freiburg and Detmold, Germany. She teaches at several institutions and is the artistic director of the Daegu Young Classical Music Festival.

Shim said he is grateful to present Dichterliebe, the program from his debut, and that he prepared it with deep feeling, aware it could be his final recital. All seats are by invitation. The performance is suitable for elementary school students and older. Inquiries: 010-8859-7738.
