[Sports Today reporter Kim Tae-hyung] Singer-songwriter Lee Jae reflected on his performance at the Academy Awards.
On the afternoon of the 1st, a press conference celebrating Netflix’s K-Pop Demon Hunters Oscar wins was held in Theater 15 at CGV Yongsan iPark Mall in Seoul’s Yongsan district. Director Maggie Kang, director Chris Appelhans, Lee Jae, and The Black Label producers IDO (Lee Yoo-han·Kwak Jung-gyu·Nam Hee-dong) attended.
Lee said that he already knew samul nori and pansori would be part of the performance during rehearsals. \”I actually cried a lot during rehearsal. Performing with the members was very emotional,\” he said. \”As a Korean, it was incredibly satisfying and moving to present gugak and pansori on such a major U.S. stage. I felt confident even before going onstage.\”
Asked about Hollywood stars like Leonardo DiCaprio and Emma Stone waving light sticks in support, he said he intentionally avoided looking their way during the set and only noticed afterward. \”It was the first time I’d seen Leonardo DiCaprio holding a light stick — that was surprising. It really felt like the power of K. Emma Stone seemed to love it, too,\” he laughed.
K-Pop Demon Hunters is an action-fantasy animated film about K-pop girl group Huntrix — Rumi, Mira, and Joy — who secretly protect the world behind their dazzling performances. The film earned a rare double win at the 98th Academy Awards, taking home Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song.
