How ‘응급실’ Became a Steady Seller: Insights from Kim Jun-han

[Sports Today reporter Kim Tae-hyung] Actor Kim Jun-han reflected on his days as the drummer for the band izi and revealed how much he still earns from the group’s hit \”Emergency Room.\”

On the 28th, the YouTube channel ‘Weekend Yeonseokgeuk’ uploaded a segment titled \”Today’s Talk Won’t Let Me Go… Yubaritokbari | Day 30 of Business | Lee Jong-won Jang Da-ah Kim Jun-han.\” Lee Jong-won, Jang Da-ah and Kim Jun-han — who appear in the film Salmokji — were guests on the episode.

Kim, who played drums for izi, said he is from Masan and moved to Seoul after high school to pursue music. He explained that he started playing in high school but only fully committed to music in his senior year.

He recalled joining the school band out of curiosity. \”When you’re that age and friends get hooked on something, you dive in headfirst,\” he said, adding that he began holding drumsticks then. Lee Jong-won noted that he, too, was a drummer in his high school band. Jang Da-ah laughed and admitted she had no connection to drums.

Kim said he has been away from the drums for more than 15 years. Still, he surprised the group by effortlessly playing the drum part from izi’s signature song \”Emergency Room,\” drawing impressed reactions. \”That brings back memories,\” he said, and Yoo Yeon-seok, Lee Jong-won and Jang Da-ah broke into warm applause.

When Yoo teased that \”Emergency Room\” probably comes up automatically at karaoke, Kim replied with a laugh, \”It’s always on the list. The song has grown on me — I’m used to it now.\” He added that they used to sing it at company dinners.

Yoo mentioned that \”Emergency Room\” used to be a staple in karaoke’s Top 100 but had heard it recently fell out. Kim corrected him: \”That’s a misunderstanding. It’s still within the top 20.\” Production staff confirmed that, as of March 15, \”Emergency Room\” was No. 5 on the karaoke chart.

Yoo apologized, and Kim called the track a steady seller. \”To my knowledge, it hasn’t dropped out of the Top 100 in the last 20 years,\” he said. When Lee asked about karaoke royalties, Kim described them as incremental but meaningful: \”They help bit by bit, like a drizzle soaking your clothes.\” Yoo quipped, \”So you didn’t take some shortcut to become a landlord in Korea,\” and Lee jokingly added, \”How to become a landlord with ‘Emergency Room,’\” prompting laughter.
