The Boyz’s New is set to make his musical theater debut in a classic tale of star-crossed lovers.
One Hundred, New’s agency, announced that the K-pop idol has been cast as Romeo in the upcoming production of “Romeo and Juliet,” slated to open on March 24 at the Hanwha Art Center in Seoul. This marks an exciting expansion of New’s artistic repertoire early in the year.
Based on Shakespeare’s timeless play, the musical “Romeo and Juliet” first captivated audiences in Paris in 2001. Its inaugural run saw sold-out performances for an entire year and went on to charm over 5 million theatergoers across Europe. The 2007 Korean production also drew impressive crowds, with approximately 100,000 attendees. Now, after a 19-year hiatus, the musical is poised for a highly anticipated revival in South Korea.
Ahead of next month’s premiere, fans got a sneak peek of New’s transformation into Romeo through a character poster released on the 9th. New will portray the dreamy, lovestruck Romeo, who falls head over heels for Juliet at a masquerade ball. Audiences can expect a nuanced performance as New brings to life Romeo’s journey from a whimsical dreamer indifferent to worldly affairs to a passionate lover, showcasing his delicate expressiveness.
This production is particularly significant as it marks New’s debut in musical theater. Since his 2017 debut with The Boyz, New has cultivated a devoted global fanbase through the group’s various musical releases. His role in “Romeo and Juliet” presents an opportunity to showcase his versatility and explore new artistic territories.
“Romeo and Juliet,” featuring New, will run from March 24 to May 31 at the Hanwha Art Center in Seoul, promising a fresh take on this beloved classic.
