Mercedes-Benz Korea is ramping up efforts to revitalize its brand and expand market share this year. The automaker is working to rebuild its reputation following the EQE 350 incident while simultaneously broadening its electric vehicle lineup and overhauling its sales structure to prioritize customer experience. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to reposition the company in the rapidly evolving EV market.

Industry data from the 10th reveals significant shifts in Mercedes-Benz’s performance within the Korean electric vehicle sector over recent years. The German luxury carmaker saw EV sales surge from 1,363 units in 2021 to 5,006 in 2022, peaking at 9,184 in 2023. However, projections for 2024 indicate a decline to 4,506 units, signaling a reversal of the upward trend. The following year is expected to see a further drop to 2,118 units, underscoring a deceleration in growth. This January, Mercedes-Benz’s EV sales in Korea reached 1,207 units.

A pivotal moment occurred in August 2024 with an underground parking lot fire in Incheon involving a Mercedes-Benz EQE electric vehicle. Reports indicated that the car was equipped with batteries from Chinese manufacturer Farasis Energy. In the aftermath, consumer apprehension about EV safety intensified, sparking government-level discussions on mandating battery manufacturer disclosures and impacting the broader market. This incident prompted consumers to scrutinize not only vehicle brands but also battery suppliers, safety technologies, and thermal management systems more closely.

In response to these market dynamics, Mercedes-Benz has doubled down on its electrification strategy. The company plans to introduce ten new models to the Korean market this year, aiming to bolster its product competitiveness. Key to accelerating its electric transition are new EV offerings including the all-new electric CLA, GLC, and GLB models.

While Mercedes-Benz has yet to disclose specific battery brands for these models, the company currently sources batteries from Korean manufacturers LG Energy Solution and SK On, as well as Chinese suppliers CATL and Farasis. A Mercedes-Benz spokesperson stated that battery brand information for the new electric models launching in Korea this year will be revealed upon release, emphasizing that safety remains the top priority, backed by world-class technology.

Mercedes-Benz is also revamping its sales approach with the introduction of “Retail of the Future” this year. This initiative marks a shift from the traditional dealer-centric model to a centralized system where the company headquarters manages pricing, inventory, and contracts directly.

The luxury automaker faces new challenges as price-competitive EV brands enter the market. Mercedes-Benz must contend with domestic rivals Hyundai and Kia, which are pursuing upmarket electrification strategies, while also keeping an eye on value-oriented Chinese competitors like BYD, in addition to Tesla.

Industry analysts maintain that Mercedes-Benz still holds significant technological prowess and brand equity in the premium EV segment. They suggest that by refining both its product strategy and customer experience simultaneously, the company could regain its growth trajectory.
