Hanwha Aerospace, South Korea’s defense-sector flagship, is expanding beyond Europe and the Middle East and has opened an outpost in the U.S. military’s backyard.

Hanwha Defense USA, the company’s U.S. arm, announced plans to establish an integration and test facility for the K9 self-propelled howitzer family (K9MH) in Opelika, Alabama.

The move aims to set up a direct-delivery supply chain on the U.S. mainland for the K9, the world market leader in tracked self-propelled howitzers.

Hanwha’s push into Alabama targets the U.S. Army’s self-propelled howitzer modernization program (MTC), a potential market estimated at roughly 10 trillion KRW (7.5 billion USD).

The Army had been pursuing the XM1299 (ERCA), an extended-range howitzer, but recently suspended the program after persistent technical setbacks—most notably severe barrel wear.

Confronted with an abrupt shortfall in artillery modernization, the service moved away from risky new development and refocused on proven tracked platforms that already command more than half of the global market.

Hanwha Defense USA moved quickly to exploit that shift. The company signed a three-year lease in Alabama and committed an initial $2 million investment (about 2.94 billion KRW).

The small production hub is expected to create roughly 40 jobs. While the upfront outlay is modest, it gives Hanwha a foothold in a potential 10 trillion KRW (7.5 billion USD) market — a highly cost-effective way to pursue major contracts.

From weapons importer to supplier of U.S. standard arms

Securing an Alabama foothold signals a strategic shift that goes beyond simply opening a factory.

If the K9 wins the MTC contract, South Korea would move from decades of importing U.S. systems to exporting a core ground weapon into the heart of the U.S. Army — one of the most demanding military customers in the world.

That outcome would further validate South Korea’s defense industry, elevating it from a cost-effective alternative for Eastern Europe and developing countries to a fully recognized, top-tier global supplier.

By establishing local production and addressing the U.S. requirement for supply-chain localization, Hanwha Aerospace has captured the attention of the global defense sector. Industry watchers will be watching to see whether the company can challenge U.S. incumbents and earn designation as a supplier of U.S.-standard weapons.
