By August, relentless heat and humidity can really take a toll. That’s when you want to chase cool breezes and crystal-clear water to recharge. It’s only May, but plenty of people are already daydreaming and planning their August getaways.

You don’t need to hop on a plane—Korea is full of underrated summer hideaways. Below are four refreshing spots that will help you beat the heat in style.

Pyeongchang, Gangwon Province

Pyeongchang sits at a high elevation, so it stays noticeably cooler than lower-lying areas. Even in midsummer, you’ll find crisp temps and breezy air—perfect for a highland escape. The rolling pastures of Daegwallyeong, with wide-open green fields and fresh wind, can feel almost like a trip abroad.

When you’re in Pyeongchang, stop by Daegwallyeong Sheep Farm or Samyang Ranch. Wandering those endless grasslands has a way of melting away stress. You can also pair a visit to Odaesan National Park with a peaceful walk through the fir-tree path at Woljeongsa Temple for a full-day outing.

Pyeongchang is a favorite for campers, too—think stargazing under a sprawling night sky. With plenty of mountains nearby, you’ll find countless valley spots to cool off. Soak it all in and make the most of the fresh air.

Jeju Island

Jeju is a year-round favorite and an unbeatable domestic pick for an August escape. The island’s waters sparkle brightest in summer, and its many exotic beaches are perfect for snorkeling, surfing, or just cooling off by the sea.

Beyond the coastline, Jeju hides lush forests like Bijarim and the Saeroni Trail. A walk among the trees and a dose of phytoncides can help you shake off the worst of the summer heat.

For adventurous travelers, tackling Hallasan is a rewarding challenge. It’s Korea’s tallest peak, so come prepared—with good gear, water, and a clear plan.

Muju, North Jeolla Province

Muju blends mountains and valleys beautifully, with Deogyusan National Park as its crown jewel. While it’s famous for fall foliage, Deogyusan’s cool summer air still draws visitors. The Gucheondong Valley, where clear water winds through 33 scenic spots, is a standout.

Many areas of Gucheondong are shallow, which makes them ideal for family-friendly water play. Dense tree cover shades the valley, so you can escape the sun easily. Since you’re nearby, take the lift up to Seolcheonbong for sweeping mountain views.

The panorama of Deogyusan from higher ground is unforgettable. Like Gangwon, Muju often has clear skies—perfect for stargazing and a blissful digital detox at night.

Taean, South Chungcheong Province

Taean is the West Sea’s mudflat mecca, where varied shorelines meet pine-fringed beaches—an ideal summer playground. The Taean Coast National Park, including Anmyeondo, is dotted with beaches, so you can pick a stretch that matches your vibe.

Many Taean beaches are backed by dense black pine forests, which makes them perfect for camping or car-camping. The internationally famous West Sea mudflats add a nature-rich experience, letting you explore tidal life while soaking in the scenery.

One of Taean’s best perks is its accessibility from the Seoul metro area. If you’re based in Seoul or Gyeonggi, an August day-trip or quick overnight is totally doable.

These four domestic destinations will help you forget the August heat. With a little planning and a relaxed mindset, you can turn this summer into a collection of happy, sun-cooled memories.
