Paris is notorious for sky-high prices — even a coffee or a meal can make your wallet wince. So imagine my delight when I discovered a free observation deck that gives you views of the Eiffel Tower and the Paris skyline without spending a cent.

Today’s pick is Galeries Lafayette, the city’s shopping mecca and a genuine Paris landmark. Here’s everything you need to know about this department store where you can snag an iconic photo for free.

When you step into Galeries Lafayette’s Haussmann flagship, the first thing that grabs your attention is the massive neo-Byzantine dome — 43 meters (about 141 feet) high. Finished in 1912, the dome reads less like a department-store feature and more like a piece of art: gilded accents and ornate stained glass make you question whether you’ve walked into a museum instead of a shopping hall.

Each season, a huge installation or a Christmas tree is suspended from the dome’s center, attracting visitors from all over the world. For the best shot of the dome’s grandeur, position yourself on the terrace at the first floor (second floor by Korean standards) and frame the whole thing in one photo.

Placed on Boulevard Haussmann near the Opéra Garnier, the store sits right in the heart of the action, so it’s easy to work into your sightseeing route. Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann is located at 40 boulevard Haussmann, 75009 Paris. Current hours are Monday–Saturday from 10:00 AM to 8:30 PM, and Sunday from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

If you want a closer look at the dome — with a side of adrenaline — don’t miss the Glasswalk on the third floor (fourth floor by Korean standards). This transparent bridge stretches 16 meters (about 52.5 feet) across the atrium and gives you an unbeatable vantage point to examine the dome’s details up close.

The glass floor lets you peer down at the stores beneath, which adds a thrilling vertigo effect. Glasswalk is free, but it’s popular, so you might want to check the official website and reserve ahead. It’s a go-to spot for anyone chasing a truly unique Paris selfie.

The main building’s rooftop offers sweeping views of Paris icons — Opéra Garnier, the Eiffel Tower, Sacré-Cœur and Notre-Dame all spread out before you. If you want a panoramic perspective of the city, this terrace belongs near the top of your list. It’s open from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

Keep in mind the terrace can close temporarily in bad weather, so check conditions on the day you plan to visit. The charm of this viewpoint isn’t in dizzying height; it’s that you feel intimately close to Paris’s rooftops and streets, which makes the scene feel especially vivid.

That closeness often makes you feel more at the center of Paris than at more distant lookout points. Head up before full sunset, when the sky softens, and you’ll get far better photos. Given that it’s free, this terrace is exceptional value for a Paris viewpoint.

Incredibly convenient access

One reason Galeries Lafayette is ideal for first-time visitors is its accessibility. The address is 40 Boulevard Haussmann, just a short walk from the Opéra area. You can reach it from La Fayette station (metro lines 3, 7 and 9), Havre‑Caumartin station (lines 3 and 9), Opéra station (lines 3, 7 and 8), or Auber station on the RER A line.

That makes Galeries Lafayette an easy add-on to nearby attractions like Opéra Garnier, Printemps, Madeleine and Place Vendôme. Even if you aren’t shopping, you can drop by during a central Paris stroll to see the dome and pop up to the rooftop.

Paris is a city where inefficient routing can drain your energy, so having a spot right in the middle of tourist sites and shopping streets saves time and effort — perfect for travelers on a short schedule.

Galeries Lafayette is more than a place to score bargains — it’s a cultural space that shares Paris’s history, art and some of the city’s best free views. Instead of paying for an expensive observation ticket, why not take a moment here to breathe in Paris? For travelers who want a chic, budget-friendly experience, this is a top Paris pick.
