[Sports Today reporter Sangpil Lee] Novak Djokovic, the sport’s living legend (Serbia, world No. 4), moved through the first round of the 2026 French Open with relative ease.
On the 24th (local time) at Roland-Garros in Paris, Djokovic defeated Giovanni Umpech Pericar (France, No. 83) in the men’s singles opening round, 3-1 in sets (5-7, 7-5, 6-1, 6-4).
Djokovic now owns 24 major titles, tied with retired Australian Margaret Court for the all-time record.
However, he has not added a major since 2024. He finished runner-up at the Australian Open earlier this year and arrives in Paris chasing a 25th major crown.
Djokovic got off to a shaky start, dropping the first set, but the veteran quickly turned the match around by winning the next three sets to close it out decisively.
He will face Valentin Louayé (France, No. 74) in the second round.
Meanwhile, Alexander Zverev (Germany, No. 3) advanced to the second round as well, sweeping Benjamin Bonzi (France, No. 95) 3-0 (6-3, 6-4, 6-2).
