[Herald Economy=Hyerim Park] The No. 10 Brazil jersey worn by the late “King of Football” Pelé in the 1958 World Cup final in Sweden is headed to auction.
Global auction house Sotheby’s announced June 2 (local time) that it will list Pelé’s 1958 World Cup final No. 10 jersey in an online auction running June 29 through July 16.
Sotheby’s expects the jersey to sell for more than 9.1 billion KRW (approximately $6,825,000). The auction house described it as “the shirt Pelé wore on the night his legend began,” noting its connection to one of soccer’s all-time greats.
Pelé wore the jersey when he led Brazil to the title in his first World Cup. The 17-year-old scored twice in the final against host Sweden, helping Brazil to a 5–2 victory and announcing himself on the world stage.
He still holds the record as the youngest scorer in a World Cup final. Brazil claimed its first World Cup in 1958 and, with Pelé in the squad, won again in 1962 and 1970. Pelé remains the only player to have won three World Cups.
After the final, Pelé reportedly gave the jersey to teammate and roommate Dida. Dida’s family safeguarded it for years; it later appeared in a Brazilian museum and was sold at auction in 2004 to the current owner, whose identity has not been disclosed.
The highest price paid for a football jersey at auction is Diego Maradona’s “Hand of God” shirt from the 1986 World Cup, which sold for $9.3 million in 2022. That same year, Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls “Last Dance” jersey fetched $10.1 million, setting the overall record for the most expensive sports jersey.
