On May 21, Son told USA Today he’s been following Tottenham, who are fighting to avoid relegation this season. “Last year’s title was such an astonishing achievement that watching Tottenham now is really painful,” he said. “I left the club, but I still follow their matches. I can’t watch every game because of the time difference, but I try to support them by watching the highlights.”
He said keeping up with each result has been tough and, at times, makes him feel like he’s still there. “The good news is our team has produced some positive results in recent weeks, which has lifted my spirits,” Son added. “It’s not over yet, but I want to support my former club as much as I can. Tottenham will always have a place in my heart — it’s where I learned and grew the most. From the other side of the world, I’ll do my best to cheer them on.”
Tottenham’s 1–2 defeat at Chelsea on May 20 in the 2025–26 Premier League wiped out a chance to secure top-flight safety. The club sits 17th, two points above the relegation zone — currently occupied by West Ham United in 18th. If Tottenham lose their final league match against Everton and West Ham beat Leeds United in their finale, Spurs would be relegated to the Championship next season.
Son also spoke to USA Today ahead of the upcoming World Cup in North America. “I’m the captain, but football is a team sport. I don’t focus on records or history — if we go far, I’ll be the happiest,” he said. “Being captain brings a heavy responsibility and pressure, but I try to share that with my teammates. I’m lucky to have such great teammates.”
