[Sports Today reporter Kang Tae-gu] Shin Moon-sun, a former soccer commentator turned professor, delivered a stinging critique of South Korea head coach Hong Myung-bo after the national team was hammered 4-0 by Ivory Coast.
Shin said on his YouTube channel on the 29th, \”The World Cup is not a playground for a single coach.\”
On the 28th (Korean time), Hong’s South Korea lost 4-0 to Ivory Coast in a friendly at Stadium MK in Milton Keynes, England.
That day, Hong deployed a three-man backline — three central defenders with wing-backs on each flank, technically five players in defensive roles — yet the team still conceded four goals and suffered a heavy defeat.
Shin critiqued the setup, saying, \”Even with five or more defenders, conceding three similarly executed goals out of four points to a lack of preparation.\”
He added, \”If you get exposed like that in the first half, you should make changes at halftime. Instead, the same tactics were maintained. That shows a complete lack of tactical flexibility.\”
He went on, \”The opponent maintained tempo, rhythm and consistency, while we looked unsteady overall. This loss represents a total tactical failure.\”
Turning to Hong himself, Shin said, \”A coach’s salary comes from results produced by players and staff. In any organization, performance is evaluated — but this national team is falling far short of expectations.\”
He emphasized, \”With the World Cup approaching, there’s still no clear direction, and public disappointment and anger are growing.\”
Shin issued a blunt warning to Hong: \”Study and prepare. If you can’t, at least communicate with the public. This level of unpreparedness is unacceptable.\”
