Again, political issues are taking center stage in the superintendent’s race.
Jeong Seung-yoon, a professor at Pusan National University School of Law, will register as a preliminary candidate for Busan superintendent on the 11th. Rather than immediately unveiling education policy after filing, he plans a press conference to explain his position on a helicopter-related incident that occurred during Lee Jae-myung’s tenure.
On the 10th, Jeong’s campaign announced he will register at 11:00 a.m. at the Busan Election Commission and hold a separate press briefing at 1:30 p.m. at his Yeonje-gu campaign office.
Critics say the superintendent’s race is once again being framed more by political names than by substantive education issues.
Jeong’s team did not disclose specifics of the briefing, but they indicated he will likely address the controversial helicopter transfer matter that has recently dominated political headlines.
Observers inside and outside the local education community expressed disappointment, noting that discussions about educational vision are scarce and that the race increasingly resembles a clash between political camps.
In recent Busan superintendent contests, political disputes have repeatedly overshadowed policy debates, and the divide between conservative and progressive camps has become more pronounced.
Superintendent elections are nonpartisan contests, and political neutrality remains a core principle.
Separately, on the afternoon of the 8th, Professor Jeong held a press conference in the Busan City Council briefing room to outline his stance on the June 3 local election for Busan superintendent and then shaved his head in a symbolic act.
