The People Power Party has selected incumbent Andong Mayor Kwon Ki-chang as its candidate for Andong and former Busan Deputy Mayor Ahn Byung-yun as its candidate for Yecheon County ahead of the June 3 local elections.
On May 8, the party’s Central Nomination Committee said it conducted internal primaries on May 7 and 8 using a formula of 50% party-member votes and 50% public opinion polls, resulting in those nominations.
In the Andong mayoral primary, Kwon defeated rival candidates Kwon Kwang-taek and Kim Ui-seung. In the Yecheon County primary, Ahn beat Do Gi-wook to secure the party nomination. Earlier this month, the North Gyeongsang provincial party’s nomination committee had planned to conclude its selection process but failed to reach a decision at the provincial level and referred the matter to the national party for review.
