Democratic Party of Gwangju Seeks More Female Candidates for 2026 Local Elections: What’s Next?
Daniel Kim Views

The Democratic Party’s Gwangju branch announced on March 3 that it will reopen candidate recruitment for women-only competitive districts that received only one applicant.
The Gwangju branch will accept additional candidates for the metropolitan council women’s competitive districts, specifically Seo-gu District 3 and Gwangsan District 5, until 6 p.m. on March 4.
These districts were designated as women’s special districts for the upcoming 9th local elections. However, each district only conducted interviews with a single candidate.
The other two women’s special districts — Nam-gu District 2 and Buk-gu District 3 — each interviewed three candidates on February 27-28.
In an effort to increase women’s participation in politics, the Gwangju branch will recruit additional candidates. The party will then review their qualifications and determine eligibility before proceeding with the nomination process.
New applicants must undergo a preliminary candidate qualification review. Applications can be submitted online through the party’s website.
