The court has forwarded a request for arrest consent to prosecutors regarding Independent lawmaker Kang Sun-woo, who is accused of accepting a 100 million KRW (about 75,000 USD) bribe for political nominations.
On March 10th, the Seoul Central District Court transmitted the arrest consent request to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office.
To conduct a pre-arrest hearing for a sitting member of the National Assembly, the legislature must first process the arrest consent request.
The National Assembly Act stipulates that the court with jurisdiction must submit the arrest consent request to the government before issuing a warrant. Upon receipt, the government must promptly forward a copy to the National Assembly, seeking their consent.
The arrest consent request is expected to reach the National Assembly as early as March 11th.
Previously, on March 9th, the Central District Prosecutors’ Office filed for arrest warrants for both Kang and former Seoul City Council member Kim Kyung.
Kang is accused of accepting 100 million KRW (about 75,000 USD) in political funds from Kim prior to the 2022 local elections, allegedly in exchange for promising to secure his nomination as a candidate.
