On November 10th, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry rebuffed Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s proposal for China-Japan dialogue. The official reiterated China’s longstanding position that Japan must retract its statements regarding Taiwan.

The spokesperson emphasized, “China has repeatedly expressed its firm stance on this issue. We cannot accept a dialogue that pays lip service to cooperation while actively pursuing confrontation.” Lin Jian The spokesperson further stated, “If Japan sincerely wishes to develop a strategic, mutually beneficial relationship with China, it must withdraw Takaichi’s misguided comments about Taiwan, adhere to the four major political documents between our nations, and demonstrate genuine commitment to dialogue through concrete actions.”
This statement comes in response to Prime Minister Takaichi’s remarks during a press conference the previous day, where she stated, “We maintain our policy of building a constructive and stable relationship with China, and we remain open to dialogue.”
Sino-Japanese relations have rapidly deteriorated since Takaichi’s comments last November, shortly after taking office, suggesting Japan could invoke collective self-defense in response to a Taiwan crisis.
Beijing has responded forcefully, asserting that Takaichi crossed a red line regarding Taiwan, which it considers a core national interest. China has implemented retaliatory measures, including travel and study restrictions, halting seafood imports, and banning the export of dual-use goods.
The Chinese Ministry of Defense also directly addressed Japan’s constitutional amendment issues.
Defense Ministry spokesperson Zhang Bin stated, “Japan is once again boldly pursuing constitutional recognition of its Self-Defense Forces. This move is not about improving the law; it aims to dismantle the foundation of the ‘peace constitution.’ Rather than seeking proper designation for the Self-Defense Forces, it seeks to eliminate military constraints and return to the path of militarism instead of becoming a ‘normal country.'”
He added, “Japanese right-wing factions are attempting to challenge the post-war international order through military, public opinion, and legal means. The international community must remain highly vigilant and firmly restrain these actions to protect the achievements of World War II and maintain regional peace and stability.”
