[Alpha Economy = (Chicago) Paul Lee, correspondent] Spotify said it will roll out a new feature, developed in partnership with Universal Music Group (UMG), that allows Premium subscribers to create AI-generated song covers and remixes.
In a joint statement on May 21, the companies confirmed the agreement but declined to disclose financial terms or the roster of participating artists.
UMG’s roster includes Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Drake and Billie Eilish.
The companies said the tool is intended to provide artists and songwriters with an additional revenue stream alongside existing royalties.

Spotify co-CEO Alex Norström said the initiative will be grounded in artists’ and songwriters’ consent, with clear crediting and fair compensation.
The collaboration represents Spotify’s first formal approval of user-generated AI music on its platform and heightens competition with startups offering AI music-creation tools, including Udio and Suno.
Spotify has been adding AI-driven discovery features — from a voice-activated AI DJ to natural-language playlist creation — to increase user engagement.
Record labels, concerned about copyright protection amid the rise of AI-generated music, have been negotiating new licensing arrangements. Even startups like Udio and Suno that reached deals with major labels now face a class-action lawsuit filed by more than 1,800 independent artists.
