[Anchor] May brings a lineup of classical heavyweights. Germany’s famed Munich Philharmonic is coming to South Korea with pianist Seong-Jin Cho as guest soloist. Pianist Yunchan Lim is launching his first nationwide solo recital tour in two years, stirring excitement among classical music fans. I’m Hwa-young Lee. [Reporter] The storied Munich Philharmonic will tour Korea with Korean pianist Seong-Jin Cho as its soloist. The program ranges from Mozart and Beethoven to other masters, with Cho set to perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and the fiendishly difficult Prokofiev Piano Concerto No. 2 at alternating concerts. 「Lahav Shani / Conductor」 “Seong-Jin Cho is a pianist who demonstrates the highest technical standards at the keyboard. Above all, he is an artist with his own voice.” It’s notable that Lahav Shani, a young conductor gaining global attention, will lead the orchestra as he prepares to assume the Munich Philharmonic’s chief conductor post this September. Born in Israel, Shani has faced backlash in the arts world amid calls to boycott Israel; last year, for example, a performance at a Belgian music festival was canceled. 「Lahav Shani / Conductor」 “I have consistently spoken about peace, and I still believe in humanity and peace. But I think canceling a performance because someone did not express the desired views is a violent act.” After a two-year break from solo recitals, Yunchan Lim will begin a five-city tour starting in Seoul and visiting Daegu, Busan and other cities. He will perform works by Schubert and Scriabin — composers he says he has long cherished and did not want to abandon. When he won the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2022 at 18, becoming the competition’s youngest-ever champion, he played Scriabin’s Piano Sonata No. 2 in the second round; he plans to reprise that sonata on this tour, much to the delight of his fans.
