By Park Seo-hyun, Herald MuseTaeyangOn the afternoon of May 18, Taeyang held a listening event at the Cube Convention Center in Sangam-dong, Mapo District, Seoul to mark the comeback of his fourth full-length album, QUINTESSENCE.“I’ve been nonstop this year,” he said. “I was tied up preparing for Coachella and finishing the album while prepping the stage. I don’t think I had a single day off after Coachella.” He added that the nerves before a release are familiar, but this time he felt more excited than usual. “Today also happens to be my birthday. I’m glad to be able to give fans a good gift. After a year of work, it feels like a relief to finally put the album out.”Taeyang described QUINTESSENCE — his first full-length in nine years and his first EP in three years — as an exploration of essence. “The word stuck with me visually and emotionally. I chose QUINTESSENCE as the title because the record traces my search for core truths — what the true essence is — and the process of probing and researching that.”He thanked his collaborators, singling out Paul Blanco. “We made a list of producers who might be a good fit, and Paul Blanco was the most eager to work with me. We connected creatively and got off to a strong start. He co-wrote three songs, and many others contributed in different ways.”With this year marking his 20th anniversary in the industry, Taeyang said he focused on balancing what is most authentically him with something fresh. “After so many activities, pushing for novelty is hard. Still, I kept asking what new directions I could take. You’ll hear a lot of those experiments across the album.”
The album’s title track, “LIVE FAST DIE SLOW,” appears as the second song. Taeyang said the song reflects the rapid changes of the times while asserting his own pace. “I’ve come this far by following my own direction and tempo. I intend to keep burning bright on my terms. It might be the fastest track I’ve ever released.”He explained his approach to choosing the single. “In the past I’d record many tracks and then pick a title song. For this record, I didn’t want any filler — I wanted every song to feel like a main track. That made the selection difficult. Even up to the end, we debated. This song felt like the best representation of who I am now. While on a solo tour two years ago, I decided my next album needed a fast, energetic song, so this one felt right. Shooting the music video and performing it convinced me it was the right choice.”Taeyang said the stage for this comeback features new choreography and varied staging. “I created moves different from my usual style and varied the structure. The key element for this performance is energy. We focused on breathing together and syncing with each other.”The third track, “WOULD YOU,” features Tarzan and Woochan of the All Day Project. “Watching those guys debut and perform reminded me of the feeling Big Bang had when we debuted,” he said. “I wanted to work with them. Their verses bring back a freshness and texture reminiscent of our early days. I asked Tarzan and Woochan, and they worked hard to finish the song and raise its quality.”Taeyang, who turned on the 18th, said releasing the album on his birthday was a first in 20 years. “We had planned an earlier release, but an offer to perform at Coachella came in late last year, and the timing became tricky. Preparing for Coachella made things hectic, so we postponed the album until after the festival. That pushed the release into May. Releases usually happen on Mondays, and my birthday fell on a Monday. My company suggested treating the album as a ‘birthday gift,’ and I loved the idea, so we set the release for today.”He closed by saying he expects an even busier schedule ahead and wants to make the most of it. “I’ve been tied up finishing the album and preparing activities. I want to perform without regrets — to include as much of what I can and want to do as possible. You’ll see many sides of me this year. To mark our 20th anniversary, I’ll kick off the anniversary project with this solo album and then work with Big Bang members in various ways. Please look forward to it.”Taeyang’s fourth full-length album, QUINTESSENCE, is scheduled for release today (the 18th) at 6 p.m.
