Spotify is expanding its AI music-curation feature, AI DJ, as the race for personalized music services accelerates worldwide.
On May 7, Spotify said it added French, German, Italian and Brazilian Portuguese to AI DJ — which had previously been centered on English and Spanish — and rolled the service out to new markets, including South Korea.
AI DJ analyzes listeners’ histories to deliver tailored music and voice narration. Rather than offering simple suggestions, it blends familiar favorites, long-unplayed tracks and new releases into a radio-like, personalized stream.
Spotify said that since AI DJ’s beta debut in 2023, it has shaped the listening experiences of about 94 million premium users.
With this expansion, AI DJ is now available in South Korea, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Switzerland and Austria, bringing the total number of supported countries to more than 75.
Spotify also introduced new DJ personas for the added languages. Maïa (French) projects a polished, approachable vibe; Ben (German) offers a calm, warm presence; Alex (Italian) leans toward an emotive, steady tone; and Dani (Brazilian Portuguese) reflects a dynamic, trend-forward musical sensibility.
The company said it collaborated with local teams to craft voice styles and phrasing that feel natural in each language and cultural context.
The feature has evolved into a more interactive service. Early versions provided music with brief commentary; since last year, users can ask AI DJ — by voice or text — to change mood or genre. Commands can be as simple as “Play party music” or “Switch to songs that fit a date-night mood.”
Spotify has continued to expand its AI toolkit. It recently added a feature that turns natural-language prompts into playlists: type a request such as “late-night jazz playlist for focus,” and the AI assembles a tailored music or podcast list.
Users can access AI DJ by typing “DJ” on the app home screen or in the search bar, and they can change the language in the settings menu. Spotify said the feature remains in beta and will be refined over time.
