[By Go Nari, EPN NPNow] Allen Osmond, a founding member and the eldest of The Osmonds, has died. He was 76.
KUTV reported on April 21 that Allen Osmond died at his home in Utah at about 8:30 p.m. on April 20, with family at his side. His longtime wife, Susan Osmond, and their 8 sons were present.
He was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis about 40 years ago and retired from performing, but he remained the group’s spiritual center and continued to receive steady support from family and fans.
His brother Merrill Osmond said in a statement, “He combined creativity, faith and love. His life was a blessing to many.” Merrill added, “On behalf of the family, I want to thank everyone who supported us and who will continue to remember his intentions and his message.”
Merrill later reflected on their last meeting on his personal account. “Two days before he died, we spent quiet time together, had a serious conversation and shared warm jokes,” he wrote. “Although his health had declined considerably, he asked that the world remember the work he accomplished and its meaning.”
Allen formed The Osmonds with his brothers Wayne, Jay and Donny, and the group enjoyed worldwide popularity after their debut. He played a central role in the band, helped lead its heyday and left a lasting mark on the music world.
Beyond his music career, he supported children’s hospitals and helped establish a foundation for orphans. He is survived by his wife, Susan; 8 sons; 30 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.
Fans around the world are mourning the passing of an artist who gave steady devotion to his audience for decades.
