Discover the Hidden Family Ties: Billie’s Si-yoon Reveals Connection to Iconic Singer Shim Soo-bong

[Sports Today reporter Kim Tae-hyung] Billlie member Siyun revealed a family connection to singer Shim Soo-bong.

The March 31 premiere of JTBC’s Hidden Singer 8 featured Shim Soo-bong as she went head-to-head with vocal impersonators.

That night, Billlie members Tsuki and Siyun were seated in the audience. Host Jeon Hyun-moo asked Tsuki, \”You’re Japanese — do you know Shim Soo-bong?\” Tsuki replied, \”I’ve been listening to her a lot on my commute and studying her music lately.\”

Siyun drew attention when she said she was related to Son Tae-jin. Son Tae-jin clarified, \”We’re sixth cousins.\”

Siyun added that she looked it up and discovered they are actually ninth cousins, and that Shim Soo-bong is her great-great-grand aunt. Shim appeared taken aback and joked, \”We’ll talk about this later,\” prompting laughter.

Viewers also noted Shim Soo-bong’s musical lineage. From her great-grandfather through her father, uncle and aunt, the family has long been involved in music—earning them the nickname \”the Bachs of folk music.\” Shim herself has shown wide-ranging talent, performing as a rock band’s drummer and working as a singer-songwriter.

Son Tae-jin, whom Shim referred to as a great-aunt figure, said, \”My role today will be important. There’s color in her speaking voice as well as her singing. I should know her best.\” He added with a laugh, \”If they get it wrong, maybe they’ll take me off the family register.\”
