EXO’s Lay Produces NouerA: What This Means for K-Pop’s Future?

EXO member Lay has stepped into the role of producer for the up-and-coming seven-member boy group NouerA.

According to a report by TenAsia on January 10th, Lay is collaborating with NouerA, who made their debut last year. Industry insiders suggest that Lay’s decision to partner with NouerA is a strategic move to boost their global appeal. The EXO star will leverage his extensive experience as an artist to oversee the production and direction of NouerA’s upcoming album.

This collaboration aims to broaden NouerA’s global musical horizons while maintaining their unique style. Fans can expect fresh sounds and performances that push the boundaries of K-pop.

Lay, who previously showcased his production skills with girl group R.E.D last year, is now expanding his repertoire to include boy group production. NouerA teased their comeback and new mini-album release through their official social media channels on the 10th, generating buzz with news of their collaboration with the EXO member.

Lay, a Chinese national, had been less active in the Korean music scene but made a triumphant return with EXO after a 2.5-year hiatus, much to the delight of fans. However, he raised eyebrows by skipping a fan meeting in December that was meant to announce EXO’s upcoming activities. Despite this, EXO, including Lay, made a successful comeback with their 8th studio album’s title track ‘Crown,’ clinching five music show wins.

NouerA, the group collaborating with Lay, has been turning heads in the international music scene even before their official debut. They received a coveted invitation to the ‘Billboard No.1s Party’ in Los Angeles, marking their first appearance before global music industry heavyweights. Billboard and Billboard Korea also named them ‘2025 K-pop Rookies,’ highlighting their potential even before their debut.

NouerA burst onto the K-pop scene in February last year with their debut album ‘Chapter: New is Now.’ The release was a hit, selling approximately 160,000 copies initially and reaching a total of 180,000 to 190,000 copies, signaling a strong start for the rookie group. Their sophomore mini-album ‘n: number of Cases,’ dropped in June, surpassed expectations with over 200,000 initial sales, setting a new personal best for the group.

NouerA is the brainchild of Noua Entertainment, featuring a diverse lineup of four Korean, two Chinese, and one Japanese member, embodying the concept of a truly global K-pop act. The group’s profile received a boost last year when Noua Entertainment’s Zhou Anxin and Zhang Jiahao appeared on Mnet’s ‘Boys 2 Planet,’ eventually debuting with the project group Alpha Drive One.

Hailed as ‘global rookies,’ NouerA is gearing up for their highly anticipated comeback on February 9th.
