K-pop sensation The Boyz’s New is set to make his musical theater debut, expanding his artistic horizons beyond the realm of idol stardom.
One Hundred, New’s management agency, announced that the multitalented performer has been cast as Romeo in the upcoming production of “Romeo and Juliet.” The musical is slated to premiere on March 24 at the Hanwha Art Center in Seoul, marking a significant milestone in New’s career.
“Romeo and Juliet,” based on Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy, first captivated audiences in Paris back in 2001. The production’s initial run was a resounding success, selling out for an entire year and drawing a staggering 5 million viewers across Europe. Its 2007 Korean adaptation was equally well-received, attracting around 100,000 theatergoers. Now, after a 19-year hiatus, the musical is making its highly anticipated return to the Korean stage.
Ahead of the March opening, fans were treated to a sneak peek of New’s transformation into the star-crossed lover Romeo through a character poster released on the 9th. New will portray the dreamy, world-weary Romeo who experiences love at first sight upon meeting Juliet at a masquerade ball. Industry insiders are eagerly anticipating New’s nuanced portrayal of Romeo’s emotional journey, expecting him to bring his signature sensitivity and depth to the role.
This production marks a significant career move for New, who has been a rising star in the K-pop world since his debut with The Boyz in 2017. Having already captured the hearts of global fans through The Boyz’s music releases and performances, New is now poised to showcase his versatility and expand his artistic repertoire through musical theater.
“Romeo and Juliet,” featuring New in the lead role, will run from March 24 to May 31 at the Hanwha Art Center in Seoul, promising a fresh take on the classic tale of forbidden love.
