Chairman Kim Jong Un Observes

North Korea said it conducted test launches of a new lightweight, multipurpose missile-launch system and a multiple-launch tactical cruise-missile weapon system.

On May 27, the Korean Central News Agency reported that on May 26 the country’s defense science research institute carried out a major weapons-launch test with Kim Jong Un in attendance.

KCNA said analysts evaluated the destructive power of a tactical ballistic missile’s \”special mission\” warhead; the reliability of an ultra-precise autonomous guidance-and-navigation system for a range-extended 240mm guided rocket projectile; and the AI-driven terminal guidance accuracy of a tactical cruise missile.

Kim expressed satisfaction, saying advanced, high-difficulty defense science technologies had been introduced into practical weapons tests.

North Korea added that it plans to deploy the tactical cruise missile with a long-range artillery brigade near the southern border, and that Kim assessed the system’s military value positively.

KCNA described the tactical cruise munition as a system that combines an ultra-precise autonomous navigation suite with terrain-matching navigation and integrates AI-based terminal guidance. Using a combined glide-and-thrust flight profile, it said the weapon can strike targets at roughly a 100 km range with high precision. If those claims are accurate, deployment near the Military Demarcation Line could place much of the Seoul metropolitan area, including Seoul itself, within reach.

Kim said the tests signaled a clear renewal of the country’s military strength and represented a major technical advance in combat power. He added that the fire-control and automation systems on all launch vehicles have been modernized for contemporary warfare, improving their combat applicability.

He said it is essential to possess destructive power so overwhelming that an adversary could not survive by chance, arguing such capability creates extreme anxiety and fear in the enemy and serves as a critical element of deterrence and its responsible exercise.

Earlier, the Republic of Korea Joint Chiefs of Staff said it detected multiple projectiles, including short-range ballistic missiles, launched into the Yellow Sea from the Jeongju area of North Pyongan Province on May 26.

The military assessed a short-range ballistic missile flew about 80km (roughly 50 miles) and said rocket artillery was also fired. Analysts said the so-called \”mixed fire\” tactic—launching ballistic missiles and rocket artillery together—appears intended to complicate air-defense responses and demonstrate strike capability.
