The Nigerian military said U.S. and Nigerian forces killed 175 Islamic State fighters in a series of joint airstrikes in northeastern Nigeria.
On the 19th (local time), the Nigerian military said in a statement that the strikes targeted IS checkpoints, weapons caches, logistics hubs, military equipment and financial networks.
The dead reportedly included senior commanders of Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), Abd al‑Wahhab and Abu Musa al‑Mangawi.
U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) also confirmed the account.
On the 15th, President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that the joint U.S.-Nigerian operation had eliminated Abu Bilal al‑Munuki, whom he described as the “No. 2” in the global IS network.
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu thanked Trump and called for firmer strikes on terrorist hideouts across Nigeria.
Since 2009, the homegrown Islamist extremist group Boko Haram and its offshoots — including ISWAP and IS Sahel (also referred to as Rakurawa) — have attacked security forces and civilians, killing more than 40,000 people and displacing about 2 million.
At Nigeria’s request, U.S. forces struck IS targets in northwest Nigeria on Dec. 25 last year and have since deployed counterterrorism support personnel and drones to the region.
