The Barakah nuclear power plant complex in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, suffered a fire after a drone struck the site.
On May 17, Yonhap News Agency reported the Abu Dhabi Government Media Office said emergency crews responded to a blaze at a generator located outside the plant’s internal security perimeter in the Al Dhafra area following the drone strike.
The office said there have been no reported injuries and that radiation safety levels were unaffected. The UAE Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) said the plant’s core systems remain fully operational.
UAE authorities did not identify a suspect or group responsible for the drone strike.
South Korea’s Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) exported its APR1400 reactor design to Abu Dhabi and built Barakah, the Middle East’s first commercial nuclear power plant. The four-unit facility, with a combined capacity of 5,600 megawatts, entered full commercial operation in April 2024 and now supplies roughly 25% of the UAE’s electricity demand.
