The HMM vessel Namu is docked at the Dry Docks World Dubai shipyard in the Port of Dubai, United Arab Emirates[Yonhap News Agency][Yonhap News Agency]
South Korean-led investigators conducted a second day of on-site work into the cause of the fire aboard the HMM Namu, which had been anchored in the Strait of Hormuz. According to HMM and local sources, the team — three investigators from the Korea Maritime Safety Tribunal under the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and four fire-forensics specialists from the National Fire Agency — resumed inspections on the 9th (local time) at the Dubai repair yard where the Namu is docked. The investigators reviewed the ship’s voyage data recorder (VDR), commonly called a black box, and closed-circuit TV footage. They also continued taking crew statements that began the previous day. So far, there are no visible signs of external impact on the vessel. Investigators are focusing on a detailed examination of the engine room where the fire started to determine whether an external attack — including the possibility of an Iranian strike — or an internal failure caused the blaze. The team plans to enter the engine room, which is located beneath the port-side stern, for a thorough forensic inspection. If needed, they may deploy underwater drones or divers, or use a crane to lift the ship and inspect the hull below the waterline visually. That section of hull is normally submerged and cannot be inspected while the vessel is afloat. Twenty-four crew members, including six South Koreans, completed face-to-face interviews with the government team the night before and temporarily disembarked. They have moved to accommodations in Dubai to rest and may return to the ship as the investigation requires. Officials said decisions about whether the disembarked crew will remain ashore or return home will depend on how long repairs to the Namu take. #Namu #Hormuz #Fire #Forensics Yonhap News TV — story tips and inquiries: KakaoTalk/LINE jebo23 Shin Joo-won (nanjuhee@yna.co.kr)
