A U.S. delegation is set to visit South Korea in February to discuss key elements of the U.S.-South Korea security package, including the construction of nuclear-powered submarines and issues related to nuclear fuel enrichment and reprocessing.
During a press briefing on the 10th, a South Korean Foreign Ministry official revealed, “We understand that a multi-agency delegation is being assembled to address nuclear enrichment and reprocessing, nuclear submarines, and shipbuilding matters.”
The delegation is expected to comprise representatives from various U.S. government bodies, including the National Security Council (NSC), State Department, Department of Energy, and Department of Defense. Upon arrival in South Korea, they are likely to engage with their counterparts in relevant ministries such as Foreign Affairs, National Defense, and Trade, Industry, and Energy.
The official emphasized that this visit would likely yield more substantive discussions. “The U.S. side has repeatedly assured us that they’re preparing for talks that will produce tangible outcomes during this visit,” he stated. “This won’t be a mere courtesy call. We anticipate in-depth, concrete discussions on various issues.”
The talks are expected to cover all aspects of nuclear fuel enrichment and reprocessing.
However, the recent U.S. announcement regarding potential tariff reimposition could potentially impact these discussions. There are concerns that issues such as the processing of the special law on U.S. investment might affect the timing of the delegation’s visit. Addressing these concerns, the Foreign Ministry official stated, “Our efforts and position will be clearly communicated to the U.S.” He added, “Given the ongoing close communication between trade authorities on non-tariff barriers, if we can create a positive atmosphere and resolve these issues, it will undoubtedly have a beneficial impact on our security discussions.”
