Professor Kwon Il-yong, Korea’s pioneering criminal profiler, recently shared insights into his connections with Hollywood star Don Lee and acclaimed actor Kim Nam-gil.

Appearing on KBS1’s “Let’s Live Together with Hwang Shin-hye” on April 4, Kwon offered a glimpse behind the scenes of the blockbuster hit “The Outlaws 4.”

When asked about working with “10-million-ticket” star Don Lee, Kwon revealed, “I initially declined to appear in the film. I was brought on as a consultant for ‘The Outlaws 4’ and had several meetings with Don Lee. He kept insisting, ‘Come on, just make a cameo.’ I politely refused, explaining that I’m not an actor and have zero experience. But he was persistent.” Kwon continued, “When I finally asked what role they had in mind, they said, ‘Since you’re ex-police, how about playing the Seoul Police Chief?’ That’s when I agreed.”

This collaboration led to an unexpected honor for Kwon. “I ended up reading the marriage declaration at Don Lee’s wedding,” he shared. “We’ve maintained a connection since, and I still provide consulting for him.”

Kwon, who penned the source material for the SBS drama “Through the Darkness,” also touched on some early controversy surrounding the show. With a chuckle, he explained, “Kim Nam-gil’s fans jokingly complained, ‘Why is Kim Nam-gil playing this role?’ Kim portrayed a criminal behavioral analyst in the series.”

When host Jang Yoon-jung asked if he was pleased that Kim Nam-gil was portraying a character inspired by him, Kwon offered a thoughtful response. “There’s actually a story behind that. I was hesitant to write the book because the content is so painful. It doesn’t focus on the criminals’ stories or even my own – it’s about the immense suffering of the victims. I initially refused the drama adaptation outright, fearing it might glorify criminals who prey on the vulnerable.” His tone softened as he added, “But when I heard Kim Nam-gil would be playing my role, I immediately said, ‘Of course, let’s do it.'”
