As the first anniversary of singer Koo Jun-yup’s late wife, Seo Hee-won (Xu Shiyuan), approaches, rumors about her estate have surfaced, prompting the family to vehemently deny them as “malicious gossip.”
On the 10th, Taiwanese media outlets, including TVBS, cited reports from local weekly magazine Mirror Weekly, stating that Seo Shiyuan’s mother had allegedly hired a lawyer to prevent Koo Jun-yup from claiming her daughter’s inheritance.
Mirror Weekly claimed, “While Seo Shiyuan’s mother appears cordial on the surface, she has been wary of Koo Jun-yup regarding her daughter’s inheritance rights.”
The report continued, “Seo Shiyuan’s mother managed all the earnings from her daughter’s 30-year entertainment career and supported her living expenses until her death. Her daughter even covered mortgage and credit card payments.” It added, “Seo Shiyuan’s wealth is substantial. From her rise to fame with ‘Meteor Garden’ until her passing, she consistently secured advertising deals in mainland China and Taiwan, earning tens of millions of Taiwanese dollars per contract. Her annual income often surpassed 100 million Taiwanese dollars.”
Seo Shiyuan’s estate is estimated to be around 400 billion KRW (approximately 300 million USD).
In response, Seo Hee-won’s mother stated, “I detest lawsuits that only cause distress and waste money,” adding, “I call Koo Jun-yup my ‘son.’ I love him as much as he loved Hee-won and respected me.”
The late star’s younger brother, actor Seo Hee-je, slammed those spreading such rumors, saying, “People circulating these stories have truly malicious and vile intentions.” He continued, “My brother-in-law gave my sister pure love and allowed her to experience true happiness. We are forever grateful to him.”
Seo Hee-je also emphasized, “Koo Jun-yup is part of our family. We will never harm him, only protect him,” and implored, “Please stop spreading these rumors.”
Previously, regarding Seo Hee-won’s estate, Koo Jun-yup stated, “The entire inheritance is a precious legacy that Hee-won built for her family,” expressing his intention to transfer his legal inheritance rights to his mother-in-law.
Seo Hee-won rose to fame through the Taiwanese version of “Boys Over Flowers,” known as “Meteor Garden.” She and Koo Jun-yup dated in 1998, separated, and reunited over 20 years later, marrying in 2022. Seo Hee-won tragically passed away from acute pneumonia during a trip to Japan last February.
