Singer Kim Soo-cheol broke down in tears as he reminisced about the late Ahn Sung-ki.
Kim appeared on the “Tuesday Guest” segment of KBS1’s current affairs program “Morning Yard” on the 10th to share updates about his life and career.
Known for his versatility in both popular and traditional Korean music, Kim became visibly emotional when his composition “Cheonnyeonhak” from the film “Seopyeonje” played. He then recounted his special relationship with actor Ahn Sung-ki.
Kim explained the financial challenges of researching traditional music, saying, “There’s little profit in it, so covering recording costs was always difficult.” He continued, “When I confided in Ahn about needing funds for my traditional music studies, he wired a substantial amount the very next day, allowing me to complete the recording without any issues.”
Kim revealed that even 7-8 years later, Ahn’s support remained unwavering. “Most people might question why I persist with something that doesn’t pay, but Ahn would simply ask how much I needed and transfer the funds the next day,” Kim said, expressing deep gratitude for the late actor’s consistent backing of traditional music.
Reflecting on their final interactions, Kim shared, “We kept in touch until shortly before his passing, but communication became challenging as his condition deteriorated.” His voice breaking, Kim added, “During a call with his wife, I sensed the end was near.”
Ahn Sung-ki passed away last month at 74. He had been battling blood cancer since 2019. The actor collapsed at home when his airway became obstructed while eating. Despite intensive care treatment, he never regained consciousness.
