EBS1’s World Theme Travel is plunging into the wild, breathtaking landscapes of Guizhou, China.

Tune in May 19 for the second episode of World Theme Travel — “Wow, This Place Is Another World! China.” The episode, titled The World’s Greatest Scenic Areas, highlights Guizhou’s showstoppers: deep gorges, towering waterfalls, endless peaks and cliffside temples. Professor Kim Jin-gon from the Chinese department returns as the episode’s curator.

Guizhou is one of China’s most rugged mountain provinces. The program follows its striking karst formations and dramatic canyon scenes — places where peaks seem to outnumber people — and also captures everyday life among locals who call this landscape home.

The trip starts at Wanfenglin (萬峰林), literally a forest of peaks. The ridgeline stretches so far it feels endless, creating an awe-inspiring sense of scale. The crew visits Naro Village at the base of Wanfenglin and finds a couple at the traditional market preparing a birthday spread for the wife’s 103-year-old mother. They hustle to buy longevity dishes and sunflower-seed pastries for the celebration.

At the home they meet the centenarian in person. Her warm smile and the family’s casual chatter bring an intimate, human moment into view amid the vast landscape. World Theme Travel continues its signature approach of showing life’s small, meaningful scenes rather than just glossy tourist shots.

Next stop: the world’s tallest bridge. After a winding mountain drive, the Huajiang Gorge Bridge (花江峡谷大橋) appears — its deck sits about 625 meters (roughly 2,050 feet) above the canyon floor, higher than South Korea’s tallest building. The bridge alone is jaw-dropping, and the broadcast even captures a fountain show that sprays water down into the gorge, blending monumental nature with massive engineering in one dramatic frame.

The show then visits Huangguoshu Waterfall (黃果樹瀑布), one of China’s most famous falls. Often called the largest waterfall in Asia and designated a top-tier 5A scenic spot, its sheer drop is already stunning. The program takes viewers further by walking behind the falls into the water-curtain cave (水簾洞).

The Water-Curtain Cave is linked to Journey to the West, the classic Chinese tale where the Monkey King trained. Its walkable path behind the waterfall draws crowds; the mist, thunderous roar, and the raw power of the falling water make the experience unforgettable.

Another highlight stretches along the Wujiang (烏江), a Yangtze tributary. The scenic Wugangyuan Hundred-Li Gallery winds through a canyon and is rated a 4A scenic area. River waters threading between cliffs and mist-shrouded peaks form a scene that looks straight out of a traditional Chinese ink painting.

After soaking in the views, the episode showcases Guizhou’s local flavors. One standout is suantangyu (酸湯魚), a tangy fish soup locals adore — they joke you’ll lose your strength if you don’t eat it for three days. Rice water fermented with tomatoes and chiles creates the sour broth, into which freshwater fish like sturgeon and catfish are simmered. The soup’s bright acidity and deep umami make it a regional specialty you won’t easily find elsewhere in China.

The episode also visits an unexpected industrial hub. Zheng’an County (正安縣) accounts for a large share of the world’s guitar production. The crew meets a luthier and tours his workshop to see handmade guitars that can fetch tens of millions of KRW (roughly 7,500–22,500 USD). The delicate tones ringing out in that small shop leave a lasting impression.

The journey closes at Mount Fanjing (梵淨山), Guizhou’s most iconic peak and a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. Though visitors queue from the entrance, the vibe transforms once you board the cable car and climb into the clouds.

At 2,336 meters above sea level (about 7,660 feet), the Red Cloud Golden Summit (紅雲金頂) is Fanjing’s signature sight. Two temples perch on split cliff edges, a sight that both thrills and vertigo-induces. The cliffs emerging through mist and clouds prove that calling this place one of the world’s greatest scenic areas isn’t an exaggeration.

The second episode of World Theme Travel — “Wow, This Place Is Another World! China,” titled The World’s Greatest Scenic Areas, airs May 19 at 8:40 p.m. on EBS1.
