Discover Uljin: 5 Reasons Why Ganjeolgot is Korea’s Ultimate Sunrise Spot

Some people set out before dawn just to watch the sea wake up. Waiting for the sun to lift itself over the horizon is reason enough to travel. Ulsan’s Ulju County ‘Ganjeolgot’ is one of the East Coast’s most iconic sunrise spots.

Where you catch the year’s first sunrise over the East Sea

Tucked in Seosaeng-myeon, Ulju County, Ganjeolgot has a reputation for greeting the sun earlier than most spots along Korea’s southeastern shore. Every New Year’s Day, travelers converge from across the country to watch the horizon light up, and crowds gather well before sunrise. On January 1, the sunrise here typically comes about a minute before Homigot in Pohang and roughly five minutes before Jeongdongjin in Gangneung, which helps explain its long-standing draw for early-risers.

The name Ganjeolgot comes from the landform that juts out into the sea. It was once called ganjeolgap; both gap and got mean a piece of land projecting into the water. Locals say the coastline here looked like a long bamboo pole stretching into the sea, and that image stuck.

The white lighthouse that has watched over the sea

One of the most photographed scenes at Ganjeolgot is its lighthouse. First lit in March 1920, the lighthouse has guided ships along the East Coast for decades. The current structure was refurbished in 2001; its crisp white silhouette against the blue ocean is practically postcard-perfect.

A grassy plaza and viewing area surround the lighthouse, making it an easy, pleasant place to stroll. With the open horizon behind it, the lighthouse is a favorite photo backdrop. Families flock here in spring and fall, and on clear days the coastline looks especially sharp. More than a navigational aid, the lighthouse is the landmark people associate with Ganjeolgot.

A wish mailbox that actually sends your postcards

In the plaza stands a towering wish mailbox—a local must-see. At about 5 meters tall (roughly 16.4 feet), it’s part sculpture, part working postbox. Postcards dropped here are processed and delivered like normal mail across Korea.

You can pick up postcards at the nearby Ulju specialty shop Haeolje, write a short note while watching the sea, and post it on the spot. Those small messages—jotted while waiting for the sunrise or sent as a travel memento—help the visit linger in memory.

Coastal scenery that shifts with the seasons

Ganjeolgot reveals a different mood every season. In spring, rapeseed, azaleas and rhododendrons splash color across the shoreline. When fields of yellow rapeseed bloom, the contrast of flowers and blue sea makes for an especially pretty walk. Summer offers cooling sea breezes; in fall and winter, the crisp air brings a clean, clear horizon.

Pine forests and rugged rock formations trace the coast. Walk the shoreline and you’ll pass rocks, waves and woodland in sequence. The grassy plaza, scattered sculptures and a windmill create pleasant stopping points, perfect for a leisurely seaside stroll. Ganjeolgot isn’t just for New Year’s—visit any season and you’ll find a fresh coastal experience.

A seaside route that continues to Jinha Beach and Myeongseon-do

Follow the coastal road from Ganjeolgot and you’ll reach Jinha Beach. Known for its fine sand and relatively calm waters, Jinha is one of Ulju County’s favorite shorelines. It bustles in summer and feels tranquil in the off-season.

Just offshore is Myeongseon-do. At low tide a sandy path emerges, letting you walk close to the island and see a different side of the coastline. At night, landscape lighting gives the island a whole new vibe. Jinha also attracts people who enjoy marine sports, so it pairs nicely with Ganjeolgot for a full day of sea-centered activities: sunrise at Ganjeolgot, then a relaxed daytime exploration of Jinha Beach and Myeongseon-do.

History at Seosaengpo Fortress and the Nasa beacon

The Seosaeng area blends coastal views with historic sites. Seosaengpo Waeseong, a fortress built by Japanese forces during the Imjin War, is a sobering reminder of the past, yet its remains reveal historical fortification methods and the importance of coastal defense. From the fortress walls you can take in sea and farm views, a reminder of this area’s strategic role long ago.

In spring the fortress is ringed with blooms, turning it into a popular outing spot. It’s both an outdoor classroom and a vantage point for the Ulju coastline. Nearby, the Nasa bongsudae (signal-fire station) preserves traces of historic communication systems and coastal defense—these beacons used smoke and fire to send messages and were sited for the best sea views. After Ganjeolgot and Jinha Beach, a stop at Seosaengpo Fortress and the Nasa bongsudae rounds out a thoughtful coastal itinerary.

Onggi Village, shaped by earth and fire

No Ulju trip is complete without a visit to Onyang Onggi Village. Nestled around Oegosan, the village preserves the traditions of onggi, Korea’s earthenware. Potters gathered here after the 1950s, and the craft continues today. Onggi jars stored sauces, kimchi, alcohol and grains—essential tools for Korea’s preservation and fermentation culture.

The Ulsan Onggi Museum explains onggi’s history, varieties and production techniques, and it displays a giant jar listed in the Guinness World Records—always a crowd-pleaser. The village also offers hands-on workshops where you can feel the clay and shape your own piece, which is perfect for families. If Ganjeolgot gives you sea and sunrise, Onggi Village brings you close to Ulju’s everyday culture.

Daewunsan: forest trails and mountain streams

If you want to swap the sea for mountain air, head to Daewunsan. Located near Onyang-eup, the mountain offers deep valleys and dense forest that draw hikers. Clear streams and dramatic rock formations change the scenery with the seasons. The cool valleys are refreshing in summer, and the forest trails are especially inviting in autumn.

Halfway up Daewunsan sits Naewonam Temple. Its quiet atmosphere and surrounding woods make it an ideal place to rest. The Daewunsan Healing Forest offers forest-therapy programs, too. If your schedule allows, pair a sunrise at Ganjeolgot and a beach stroll at Jinha with a mountain stop at Daewunsan to experience Ulju’s sea-and-summit contrast.

Eonyang bulgogi and coastal specialties

Local food is a highlight of any Ulju visit. Regional favorites include Eonyang bulgogi and Bonggye bulgogi—both made from hanwoo (Korean beef). Eonyang bulgogi features thinly sliced beef seasoned and grilled over charcoal, yielding a clean, smoky flavor that sets it apart from saucier versions. It’s a go-to local dish for many travelers.

Along the coast in Seosaeng-myeon you’ll find seaweed and fresh seafood. Ganjeolgot seaweed grows in strong currents, giving it a firm, chewy texture and concentrated flavor; it’s long been prized locally and remains a notable Ulju product. Seosaeng pears are another specialty, shaped by sea breezes and ample sunlight into sweet, juicy fruit. Sampling local dishes alongside coastal scenery gives you a fuller sense of Ulju County’s charm.

Practical travel information to check before you go

Ganjeolgot Park and the outdoor areas around the lighthouse are free to visit. Some indoor facilities—like the lighthouse exhibit, museums or hands-on centers—may open seasonally or close for maintenance, so check official information before you go. Major attractions provide public parking, which makes driving convenient. If you take public transit, verify bus routes from Ulsan Station or downtown Ulsan toward Ganjeolgot and note the timetable.

If you’re planning a sunrise visit, check the weather and the official sunrise time. The East Coast can be windy depending on the season, so bundle up in winter. Expect heavier traffic on New Year’s Day and weekends—leave extra travel time. Nearby amenities like a sports park and walking trails make it easy to stretch your legs after taking in the view.

Ulju County brings sea, mountains, history and living culture close together. Start with Ganjeolgot’s early light, then move on to Jinha Beach, Seosaengpo Fortress, Onyang Onggi Village and Eonyang bulgogi—the sequence flows naturally. Each season offers its own appeal: spring’s flower-lined coastal paths and fortress walks; summer’s beaches and cool valleys; autumn’s forest-and-sea strolls; and winter’s clear-air sunrises at Ganjeolgot. Rather than flashy attractions, Ulju rewards travelers who take their time to discover long-held landscapes and stories. With the blue East Sea, Ulju’s mountains and a people-shaped culture, Ulju County gives plenty of reasons to visit year-round.
