By Ham Young-hoon, Herald Economy — On April 18, Sokcho Port welcomed its first cruise of the year: the premium liner Westerdam, an 82,000-ton vessel carrying roughly 2,000 international visitors.
Sokcho City says it teamed up with Gangwon Province and the Gangwon Tourism Foundation to give arriving guests a warm, hassle-free welcome. A traditional military band performed during a festive arrival ceremony, while shuttle buses, interpreters, and guides were on hand to help tourists get around.
Sokcho Port is set to host six cruise calls this year. The season kicked off with the Westerdam (82,862 t) on April 17, followed by Costa Serena (114,261 t) on May 12, and The World (43,188 t) on Sept. 17.
In October, the Westerdam returns on the 17th, and the Seabourn Encore (41,865 t) is scheduled to dock on the 19th and 25th.
Notably, The World and Seabourn Encore will be making their first-ever calls to Sokcho Port. Local tourism officials and private partners credit this win to persistent promotion at international cruise fairs and targeted outreach to cruise lines, highlighting Sokcho’s strong port infrastructure and attractive tourism offerings.
