Sokcho Port welcomed its first cruise of the year, officially kicking off the marine tourism season.
Sokcho City announced on the 18th that the premium cruise ship Westerdam, an 82,000-ton vessel, docked at Sokcho Port carrying roughly 2,000 international visitors.
To celebrate the ship’s arrival, the city teamed up with Gangwon Province and the Gangwon Tourism Foundation to put on a variety of welcome events. A traditional Korean wind band performed, lifting the festive mood at the harbor and offering visitors an authentic introduction to local culture.
The city also operated shuttle buses linking major attractions and stationed multilingual interpreters on site to ensure smooth movement for guests. These tailored services helped visitors experience Sokcho’s top sights and regional culture without hassle.
City officials say they expect the cruise call to energize local tourism. They anticipate the influx of international visitors will create positive ripple effects for small businesses and the tourism industry, and they plan to keep expanding cruise attractions and improving tourism infrastructure.
“With this first cruise arrival of the year, we will strengthen our tourism offerings and convenience services so more overseas visitors come to Sokcho,” a Sokcho city official said.
