Explore Busan’s Historic Songdo Beach: A 100-Year Journey with Scenic Walkways and Local Delicacies

Songdo Beach in Busan opened as Korea’s first public beach and has long been a beloved urban escape. Since it first welcomed visitors in 1913, people have flocked here for more than a century. Today it remains one of Busan’s signature waterfront spots where city and sea meet. The glittering skyline and the wide-open ocean draw crowds year-round, and at sunset the horizon flushes red as the sea, city lights, and the cable car’s glow combine to create a truly poetic scene.

The Songdo Cloud Walk, which links Turtle Island on the beach’s east side to the mainland, has become a must-stop for visitors. Opened in 2015, the path stretches 365m (about 1,198 ft) over the sea and gives you the uncanny sensation of walking on water. Some sections of the deck use transparent tempered glass and perforated metal grating, so looking down at the blue water beneath your feet brings the coastline’s energy into sharp focus. The sound of waves hitting the steel structure adds to the pleasure of the stroll. From the bridge you can take in sweeping views of Songdo’s anchored boats and the full beach panorama. Best of all, the walkway is free and open daily from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., so anyone can drop by to soak up the seaside atmosphere.

If you want an even closer connection to the coast, take the Songdo Coastal Walk along the sea cliffs. The route linking Songdo Beach to Amnam Park runs about 800m (roughly 2,625 ft) on a steel deck. The trail narrows to about 1m (around 3.3 ft) in places, but dramatic rock formations and layered sedimentary cliffs rise right beside the path. Because of the cliffside setting, sections may close temporarily for safety checks or adverse weather, so allow extra time. The one-way walk takes about 20 minutes and includes lookout platforms and a sky bridge, letting you feel the coastline shift as you go. From here the anchorage looks scattered with ships waiting to enter Busan Port, which gives Songdo a distinctive, almost cinematic vibe.

The trail’s end at Amnam Park is where well-preserved forest paths meet the sea. It’s a popular spot for anglers, and the nearby Songdo Yonggung Cloud Bridge offers thrilling, elevated views over the water. If you walk a little farther from Amnam, the route continues to Dudo Park, a quieter stretch perfect for anyone seeking a more peaceful escape. Visitors also praise the seafood near the Amnam Park parking area—grilled shellfish, the local specialty, features fresh scallops and other seafood cooked over charcoal. Enjoyed with the sea breeze, it’s one of the area’s memorable treats.

Songdo’s neighborhood is rich in regional flavors. You’ll find Busan’s signature milmyeon, and thanks to nearby Jagalchi Market and Nampo-dong, there’s no shortage of fresh mackerel dishes. A local favorite is mackerel with dried radish greens in a savory, rich broth that’s known for being free of any strong fishy smell. The nutty oils of seasonal mackerel and the tender texture of the greens make for a satisfying, hearty meal. Nearby Songlim Park and Namhang Waterfront Park are perfect for sunset strolls, whether you’re with family or a partner. Link your visit to Gamcheon Port and Gamcheon Culture Village and you’ve got a great route for exploring Busan’s past and present.

Getting here by public transit is easy. From Nampo-dong, take buses 7, 9, 30, or 71 toward Songdo, or ride bus 26 from Busan Station and get off at the Songdo Beach stop. Many of the area’s main sights are within walking distance, so you can enjoy a relaxed, walkable exploration. Songdo Beach blends historic memories with contemporary flair, remaining a steady, restorative spot for residents. After more than a century, the beach still vividly showcases Busan’s unique coastal scenery.
