Haenam County is hosting the Myeongnyang Historical Experience Market throughout the Usuyeong tourist area on weekends and public holidays from the 11th through May 9.
Set on the historic Myeongnyang battlefield and the dramatic Uldolmok strait, the Market invites visitors to experience the legacy of Admiral Yi Sun‑sin and the Battle of Myeongnyang through immersive programs and live demonstrations.
Organized by the Haenam Usuyeong Ganggangsullae Women’s Nongyo Promotion and Preservation Association and featuring local residents from the Munnae area, the event blends history and traditional culture into hands‑on attractions—ideal for families looking for something different.
Expect vibrant performances rooted in Usuyeong’s traditions, including the UNESCO‑recognized Ganggangsullae, the Jeollanam‑do intangible cultural asset “Usuyeong Women’s Nongyo,” and “Usuyeong Dulsori,” which won the Presidential Award at the Korean Folk Arts Festival.
At Usuyeong Plaza, families can enjoy interactive historical activities like trying on a general’s armor for photos, ink‑rubbing (takbon) workshops, straw‑craft sessions, and building model panokseon warships.
Usuyeong Tourist Site marks the victorious ground of the Battle of Myeongnyang, where Admiral Yi Sun‑sin defeated 133 Japanese ships with 13 vessels during the Jeongyu Rebellion. The Uldolmok strait, about 1 km wide, lies between Haenam and Jindo. Popular attractions include a free skywalk that lets visitors walk over the dramatic sea and a paid Myeongnyang sea cable car crossing Uldolmok.
Each fall, the Myeongnyang Victory Festival and a slate of cultural events and hands‑on programs help the area cement its place as a must‑visit local destination.
