Namsuheon (南水軒), a new hanok experience village that pairs traditional-style lodging with hands-on cultural programming, has opened in Namsu-dong, Suwon, Gyeonggi Province.
Suwon City announced on the 28th that it held an opening ceremony at Namsuheon in Namsu-dong, Paldal-gu, on the 27th and has now begun full operations. The complex spans a total floor area of 2,640.78 m² (about 28,425 sq ft), with 1 basement level and 2 stories above ground, and brings together accommodations, relaxation, and traditional cultural activities under one roof.
The layout separates functions by floor for a clear guest experience. The first floor features shared spaces including a gallery café and a hanok library, while the second floor offers 12 hanok guest rooms and 6 outdoor spa facilities. Construction began in April 2023 and was completed recently.
The name blends Namsu (南水), referring to the area south of the Suwoncheon stream, with heon (軒), meaning “house.” The final name was chosen after gathering public input.
Suwon plans to run Namsuheon as a stay-focused tourism hub where visitors can get up close to the charm of hanok architecture and traditional culture. The city will roll out programs linked to nearby cultural assets—like the Suwon Media Center and the Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival—with the goal of boosting tourism and increasing foot traffic in the city’s historic downtown.
The opening ceremony drew Mayor Lee Jae-jun, Jang Mi-young, chair of the City Council’s Culture, Sports and Education Committee, National Assembly member Kim Young-jin, and members of the Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly.
Mayor Lee Jae-jun said, “Namsuheon is a hybrid cultural space that combines hanok lodging with traditional cultural experiences. I hope it becomes a go-to stay destination where tradition and modern comfort meet, and that it contributes to the local economy and helps revitalize the old downtown.”
