[Sports Today reporter Kang Tae-gu] Goh Woo-seok (Detroit Tigers) saw his shot at the big leagues stall again, and his scoreless run at Triple-A came to an end.
Pitching for Detroit’s Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens, Goh entered as the team’s third pitcher on May 29 at Fifth Third Field in Toledo, Ohio, during a home game against the Columbus Clippers (the Cleveland Guardians’ affiliate). He threw two innings, allowed three hits and three runs, struck out four and issued one walk.
Goh began a scoreless stretch in Double-A on May 4 and, after being promoted to Triple-A on May 9, extended the run to seven consecutive scoreless appearances through May 25.
Still, he was passed over for a major-league call-up. Detroit placed closer Kenley Jansen on the 15-day injured list with pelvic inflammation but opted to summon left-hander Drew Somers instead of Goh.
The decision likely came down to 40-man roster logistics. Somers is already on the 40-man roster, so the club could add him to the active 26-man roster; Goh is not on the 40-man, and clearing a spot for him would have been difficult.
Beyond missing the promotion, Goh allowed runs in this outing, snapping his scoreless streak and raising his ERA to 3.77.
With Toledo trailing 1-4 to start the top of the fourth, Goh entered as the third pitcher. He retired leadoff hitter Angel Henao on a flyout to center but yielded a hit to Millian Tolentino.
Goh then struck out Eduardo Valencia and Juan Virto to end the inning.
In the fifth, he recorded a 1-2-3 inning: Kahril Watson struck out swinging, Ralfi Velasquez flew out to left, and Bo Naylor struck out looking.
Trouble arrived in the sixth. Goh surrendered consecutive doubles to Nolan Jones and C.J. Kepers, then walked Henao.
With no outs and runners on first and second, Goh was replaced by Jack Little. Little allowed an RBI single to Cooper Ingle and a sacrifice fly to Virto, which increased the runs charged to Goh to three.
Toledo could not rally and lost 3-10.
