TOLEDO, Ohio — MyDaily reporter Shim Hye-jin: Detroit Tigers prospect Go Woo-seok, who was passed over for a major-league call-up, saw his scoreless streak end in Triple-A after seven appearances.
Working out of the Detroit organization’s Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens, Go entered in relief on the 29th (Korean time) at Fifth Third Field against the Columbus Clippers (a Cleveland Guardians affiliate). He pitched two innings, allowing three hits and one walk, striking out four while giving up three earned runs.
His season ERA jumped from 1.38 to 3.77.
Go took the mound in the top of the 4th with the Mud Hens trailing 1-4. After one out, Milan Tolentino singled. Go struck out Eduardo Valencia following an ABS review, but Tolentino stole second to put a runner in scoring position. Go closed the inning by striking out Juan Brito on an 80.2-mph curve.
He stayed in for multiple innings. With Toledo cutting the deficit to 3-4, Go tossed a clean 5th — a 1-2-3 inning that included two strikeouts and a flyout.
He ran into trouble in the 6th. Nolan Jones and C.J. Keipers hit back-to-back doubles to plate runs. Go then walked Ángel Zenao after a seven-pitch, full-count battle.
Go’s bid for a three-inning relief outing fell short. He was replaced by Jack Little, who struck out Tolentino but surrendered an RBI single to the next hitter. With one out and runners at the corners, Juan Brito hit a sacrifice fly that increased Go’s earned runs to three.
Detroit made a roster move that day, placing closer Kenley Jansen on the 15-day injured list with pelvic inflammation. That created a bullpen vacancy and prompted a Triple-A call-up — but the Tigers bypassed Go, instead promoting Drew Sommers to the big leagues.
Across Double-A and Triple-A this season, Go has appeared in 16 games, posting a 2-1 record with three holds, two saves and a 1.38 ERA.
His recent Triple-A stretch had been impressive. Since being sent back to Triple-A on May 9, Go had shown dominant form, recording 11 strikeouts over six scoreless innings.
Still, Detroit passed him over.
After the disappointment of a denied promotion, Go returned to Toledo’s mound, but his string of scoreless outings came to an end.
